Links Award $10,000 in College Scholarships

In May 2007, on the heels of the tremendously successful White Rose Luncheon scholarship benefit, the West Palm Beach Chapter of The Links, Inc., awarded $10,000 to needy and deserving high school students preparing to attend college.  Scholarships are awarded to students focusing on the arts.  Each student went through a rigorous application process including a written application with a personal statement, an interview and a performance or display of their talents.

The West Palm Beach Chapter is proud to present its 2007 Scholarship Recipients:

pic1Myrsha Lazarre has been accepted at Florida International University, University of Miami, Florida State University of South Florida, University of Texas, Jacksonville University, and Stetson University.  Myrsha’s objective is to flourish as a classical pianist and pursue a degree in music performance. She is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars, National Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society.  She received two Gold Presidential Awards for Academic Excellence, and was nominated for Who’s Who Among American High School Students.  At Dreyfoos, she was in the Advanced Placement and Honors Program 2003-2007.  Her audition selections were “Premiere Ballade” by Frederick Chopin and the presto movement from “Moonlight Sonata” by Ludwig Von Beethoven.

pic2Jessica Thomas seeks to further her education by attending Florida A&M University with a major in theater and a minor in communications/education. She was awarded Theater Student of the Year in 2003-2004 and has appeared in various theatrical productions at Alexander W.  Dreyfoos School of the Arts where she is also a member of the Thespian Society and Step Team. Her community service includes reciting oratorical selections, creating, directing, acting in theatrical productions, and tutoring young aspiring theatrical students.  Jessica is focused.  Her audition piece, “The Dark Skin Girl” came to life as she used her soft spoken voice to project the feelings of the character and emit emotion from her audience.

pic3Andrew Ross distinguishes himself as “the best of the best.” This quote comes from one of Andrew’s teachers in the visual arts department at A.W.Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts.  His incredible talent and grades (one of the highest GPA’s of the entire school) has helped to propel and prepare him for entrance into the prestigious Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, NY.  Andrew’s objective is to be an exhibiting artist that essentially provokes thought.  He intends to continue to help other artists, receive his MFA from Yale University, and teach college students. His leadership ability has allowed him opportunities to represent his peers on the House Council serving in various positions.  Currently, he is the House Council’s Gallery Representative and president of the Art Honors Society that recognizes excellence in art and academics.

Each scholarship recipient was awarded over $3,000.  The Scholarship Committee was once again delighted to represent our organization in the selection process to award financial support to the talented youth of our community. We enjoyed their multiple talents, youthful intellect and the perspective each had of the transition to college that was before them.  Finally, we thank all of those who sponsored and supported the White Rose Luncheon, and we remain committed to serving the needs of the community.
