On June 2, 2007, the West Palm Beach Chapter of The Links, Inc., welcomed 10 new members into the Chapter. The new members are Destinie Baker, Delores Oliver Calloway, Lakiesha V. Hawkins, Lisa A. Jones, Sandra M. Powery, Upendo Shabazz-Phillips, LaVoise Taylor Smith, Salesia V. Smith-Gordon, LaMargo Sweezer-Fischer, and Elizabeth A. Taylor. The induction marks the beginning of a year-long process designed to help Links members identify and meet community needs through the organizations four facets: The Arts, International Trends & Services, Services to Youth and International Trends & Services. "We are extremely proud of these talented, accomplished leaders and look forward to continued friendship and service," said President Dena Bryant.
The Links celebrated with a formal induction ceremony and reception at the Governor's Club of the Palm Beaches. As part of the ceremony, the new members presented an overview of their "Civil Rights Restoration" Community Service Project, an effort aimed at educating Florida's citizens on the new Automatic Rights Restoration bill signed by Governor Charlie Crist on April 5, 2007. The project's aim is to help non-violent offenders become productive members of society by restoring their right to vote, serve on a jury, run for and hold public office, and hold a state-issued license. The members created an educational resource packet to be distributed throughout the State of Florida, and hope that this project serves as the foundation for a Nationwide Civil Rights Restoration Effort.
